Our MPG Member Spotlight takes a look behind the scenes of those making moves in the music production community. This week we're hearing from Elton Noyer.
What are your main roles in making music at the moment?
I’m still trying to figure that out haha. I have been doing a lot of co-production for other acts with Corey Friedlander, and mix engineer work as well as some of my own artistry.
Can you share a few projects that you’re particularly proud of and why they stand out to you?
My debut album, although production skills-wise I wasn’t yet there, it was def a good tap into how to navigate the industry and complete a huge goal.
Is there a current project you’re diving into that’s lighting you up? What makes it special for you?
Yea, I’m diving headfirst back into my own artistry, doing live performance and custom-making some of my own performance instruments too. Also, getting better at my performance craft whilst navigating a fresh, new style.
For someone eager to step into the world of music production, what’s the most crucial tip you’d offer?
Sit in the studio with other artists. Find some people who have time for you and can give advice/tips. learn, learn, learn. I was always too shy to ask for advice and help but over the last year, it’s proven to help my craft immensely.
Which artists or bands are on your playlist these days, and who do you credit as shaping your sound the most?
This is always all over the place. My sound is shaped heavily by my love of Hiphop and sample-heavy production. Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of soul-filled disco/house/hiphop fused artists such as Kaytranada Austin Millz and VHOOR.
What do you find most inspiring about the music production scene in Aotearoa?
The skills…oh boy, the skill levels of producers here in NZ is amazing!!
What are your favourite new hacks or tricks in the DAW space?
Newest trick or hack? I actually dunno haha. Probably Logic’s groove alignment function. I don’t have VocalAlign yet and Logic’s built-in one has done me well so far.
What are your favourite plugins at the moment?
Sonible pure:unmask instantly comes to mind. Awesome sidechain plugin that is very transparent. It’s like the swiss-army knife of big knob side chaining - similar to Trackspacer.
Austrian Audio’s Plugins for the OC818 are great!! I love the post-recording polar pattern editing and StereoCreator. Great tools.
SketchCassette as well. Simple and beautiful.
What are your favourite useful audio sites? - e.g. Acestudio, Splice etc.
I would say Splice. It’s really the tool I use the most for drum samples and synth presets. Also, if I’m not inspired enough, it’s great for starting song ideas.
Where can people go to find out more about you and your work?
My instagram is the best bet @scizzorhands_the_dj or beatspun.com for pieces we’ve done through the studio.
